The best way to tell is by asking! Many former slaves took on the names
of their former masters or took the sur name as Freeman - after they
were freed. There are cases in the colonial period of Freeman's owning
slaves and freeing them. And of course there are cases of males
Freemans fathering children. In any event we are all researching back
to the period.
