Dear Laurie,

There are many Oliver Freeman's listed on the various genealogy research
sites. Canadian immigrants are typically listed on American site, if they
immigrated to the USA or if their descendants immigrated. The American
genealogy records are mostly comprised of donated records from citizens, tax
records, military records, census records, books, etc. Racial and/or ethnic
records are usually available and mixed with the standard databases, not
specifically searchable by ethnic origin at all, and usually not noted. An
American is an American citizen, a Canadian is a Canadian citizen; but there
is usually no race or ethnic bias or categories in the databases.

In starting your research, it is important to have as much basic starting
info as possible, for example:

Approximate date of birth (DOB) and death (DOD) of an individual.
Where the individual was born, resided, and died.
Approximate date of marriage (DOM)
Any military service
Spouse and children's names, DOB, DOD, DOM

It is extremely difficult to start searching for a parent or grandparent
since records are usually not available for privacy reasons (not public
domain) for as much as 70 years. This includes census and tax records,
birth and death certificates, etc. You usually have to hire a pro or
subscribe to private databases for those kind of searches.

Here's some good sites to begin your searches, some are pay, some are not:

www.genweb.net/freeman
www.ancestry.com
www.familytreemaker.com
www.genealogylibrary.com
www.familysearch.com
www.rootsweb.com
www.familytreesearcher.com
www.genealogy.com

www.rootsweb.com is a real good place to start and check the Social Security
Death Index for Oliver Freeman. Rootsweb will list other "free" databases
that Oliver can be found in.

Second I would check www.familytreemaker.com or www.familysearch.com (the
Latter-Day Saints).

Good luck and should you have future questions, don't hesitate to ask.
