The virus does not GO through rootsweb and it doesn't matter if you use
digest form or not. When you get messages from a list it has two
"from"s in it actually. It will show the e-mail address of the person
that sent it and the e-mail address of the list. This virus, called
BadTran, finds all the e-mail addresses of all the messages in the
computer that haven't been read yet, takes all or part of the message,
says something like "look at the attachment" so it looks like you are
getting a reply to something you sent out. Sometimes these are old
messages, in someone's delete box that were glanced at and deleted
before they were registered as read, and sometimes they are immediate
replies to something you just sent out. The person with the infected
computer DOES NOT KNOW they have the virus. Their computer does all
this when they go on the internet.
Now ROOTSWEB does not allow attachments through its system so this
virus, although sent to RootsWeb, is not passed on by RootsWeb to the
list. But the virus was also sent to the private e-mail address in your
original message, and this got through from the infected computer, back
to you.
You are well advised to install an anti virus program, and then chose
the option of having it examine each piece of incoming mail for viruses
before they enter your computer and chose an automatic update every
week. Viruses that effect lists are happening more frequently now.
