Greetings Freeman Family Researchers,
Now that the year has ended and the new year is upon us
it may be time to kick our family research into high gear.
I'd like to introduce the availability of DNA testing as a
valuable tool to the new Freeman researchers who have
recently joined our Freeman mailing list...as well as
remind our old timers about our project.
DNA testing for genealogy is a relatively new addition
available to research that adds the potential for getting
over that brick wall we all face. The DNA test that is
used in our DNA project is not the type the medical or
forensic institutions use...but concentrates on the "Junk"
portion of our DNA that can be used to identifiy markers
passed down from fathers to son, basically unaltered,
for hundreds (even thousands) of years. There are no
ominous medical conditions identified in the genealogical
DNA test...and privacy of participants is gained by listing
test results by kit numbers. Pedigrees never include
living individuals...and contact information is only posted
for those who have given express permission to do so.
We have had our project under way for a little over a
year...and thus far we have identified 5 distinct Freeman
lines who originally began their adventures in the New
World in Virginia. Our DNA test proves that none of
these families descend from a recent common ancestry.
>From this we can conclude that pedigrees "linking" several
of these unique lines to the early immigrant, Col. Bridges
Freeman are in error. We are still searching for a
documented male descendant from Col. Bridges line to
verify the markers for the family line.
Finding matches in a DNA test is most exciting...and
participants busily coordinate thier research efforts with
other members of their verified family lines. But, not
finding a match is also a valuable result. It eliminates
the need to research those family lines where the
results have shown that no recent common ancestry
exists. One of our participants had been pursuing a tie
to a line that appeared to be his line of descent. He
had spent time and money in finding that piece of
evidence that would make the link. The DNA test
proved that he was descended from another line...so
no longer needs to spend money on looking for a
the wrong family...and can concentrate his efforts on
finding the tie to the correct family line.
In addition to early Virginia settlers, we also have Freeman
lines from the Carolinas, New England, New Jersey,
Kentucky, Alabama, the midwest and Texas among our
participants looking for Freeman family lines.
Please take the time to consider the potential value of
DNA testing. Our Freeman DNA project website can
be found at http://carnicle.com/DNA_Project/. For the
most current test results, click on the "DNA Test Results"
tab. You might also look at the Freeman Family
Researchers database. It is primarily made up of
pedigrees from folks who have submitted their family
lines...but can not participate in the DNA project for
one reason or another.
Wishing you all a great new year...and success in
you quest for your family roots. I hope that I will
be seeing your name added to our DNA project.
Regards,
Hope Freeman Carnicle
