Pat:

Let me share some of my notes and notes of others that
have shared this information about Andrew Friend and
what I have gotten out of it. I pretty much have done
all of this by my gut feeling on how this works in
this family line. But I am still trying to prove it
more clearly and will continue to do so. Any way here
are some of my notes that I have gather and if I have
more I will share them with everyone. And if anyone
has any other ideas about this Andrew and Nicholas
Friend I would be open to this.

>From History of Gallia County:

PERRY TOWNSHIP

In 1803, Andrew Friend came to this township and built
a cabin on Big Raccoon Creek, three miles from the
present village of Patriot. He was a squatter and
roving hunter, and in the winter of 1814 he killed
three hundred and sixty deer and five bears. He drew
the second county order for wolf scalps nine dollars
for three, on September 1st 1806 his companion,
James Burford, the same day drawing three dollars for
the first. Friend occupied a cave on Dirty Face
creek, at an early date, in Greenfield Township, This
noted hunter made all his own powder by burning sumack
into charcoal, then adding saltpetre and brimstone and
grinding them in a mortar. In early times, he
supplied a large portion of the settlers with game.
Andrew Friend married Elizabeth Peragen, and their
daughter, Mary (who married Anthony Boggs) was the
first child born in the township. The first marriage
was that of Hannah Friend (Miss Marys elder sister)
to Samuel Allison.

Notes from letters written to Pearl Leach Adamson from
Iona Friend Leach:

According to Marion Johnson (a member of the Friend
Family Association). Andrew Friend was probably the
son of Nicholas Friend #2 born ca 1702, the son John
and Anna Coleman Friend. He had sons John, Andrew,
Charles, and Augustine, all which are accounted for
except Andrew who was supposed to have settled at
Point Pleasant, W. Va. This is right across the Ohio
from Gallia Co., so she is of the opinion that this is
my Andrew, grandfather of Harvey. John Friend who m.
Anna Coleman was a son, I think, of the original
settler in Pa. an earlier Nicholas and Anna Friend. I
agree with her on this. (Mom)

From Mrs. Marilyn Schnielzky in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Andrew Friend and Elizabeth Peragin Friend families

Allison
Mary Friend b 1803 m Anthony Boggs
Nicholas Friend b 1804 m Mary Haines
Harriet Friend b m Samuel

Jane Friend b m Hugh

Electa Friend b m Joseph
Blount

Andrew Friend who married Elizabeth Peragin was
supposed to have been born in Hampshire Co., Va. Ca
1749, buried in Gallia Co., Ohio ca 1825. Elizabeth b
ca 1780.

Lookup Andrew and Elizabeth Friend in Lawrence Co.,
Ohio from 1798 to 1803. Mrs. Johnson thinks he was
married before he married Elizabeth and had 2 sons.
He was in his 40s and Elizabeth 17 when they got
married. He seems to have lived in Jackson Co., Ohio
to sometime. The counties are all close together in
the very tip of Ohio E. corner??

In 1800 Andy Friend built the first cabin in Aid
Twp., Lawrence, Ohio. He was a squatter, hunter, and
trappersomewhere that Andrew and Elizabeth Friend
moved from Lawrence Co. to Gallia Co. in 1803.

I think our Andrew is the son of Andrew and Josepha
Drake Friend? What do you think?

Letters from Pearl to her mother Iona:

Supposing Marion Johnson and you are right in
tracing our Andrew Friend. Lets pick him up where he
was living with his father Nicholas in Hampshire Co.
W. Virginia 2 miles below mouth of Little Cacapon on 4
Sep 1761 in Book K. p. 330 (Land Office Records).
Nicholas John and Andrew were deeded land. Andrew
was given 252 acres, Hampshire Co., W. Virginia on the
Potomac River upper end of Long Bottom 1 Apr 1765,
Book M. p. 153. This must have been where this family
was living when they were flooded out and in 1764,
John (son of Nicholas) and his brother Andrew and
Johns young son Gabriel went looking for a new home.
They liked the Youghiogheny River area and traded an
old iron kettle, etc. for some Indian Land. In 1765
they returned to the Indian camp and took possession.
Three men and two women and some children. They were
the first white settlers on the Youghiogheny River.
Johns (old) settled at Friendsville. Charles at
McHenry and Andrew according to Glade Star # 8 31 Dec
1942 says Johns brothers Andrew, Charles, and
Augustine moved down the Youghiogheny to Turkeyfoot
Twp. (Confluence 1772 Pa.) Seven years later they
appear in the assessment Roll. Now comes a question
according to Evelyn Olsen p. 47, Indian Blood.
She speaks of two of Johns (old) brothers Charles
and Augustine with their father Nicholas located near
Nicholas brother the (old scout) of Turkeyfoot area.
The 1772 assessment of Brothers Valley Township, in
which Turkeyfoot belonged, shows them as residents.
This would be the Andrew who married Josepha Drake. I
am wondering if the Andrew, brother of John (old) his
(uncle of Gabriel, Johns young son) searched for a
new home and left for Point Pleasant on the Ohio River
after helping John (old), Charles, and Augustine move
could have gone down the Youghiogheny to Confluence
for a short period of time and then on the Ohio. He
might have visited his Uncle Andrew (Andy the Capt.
Indian Fighter, etc.) who lived in that area and died
in 1799 or 95. Andy sold his farm in 1793 and was no
longer on the Assessment of Somerset Co. when it was
formed in 1795. But I would think our Andrew surely
would have seen his famous Uncle Andrew if his had a
chance and it would be right on his way to the Point
Pleasant on the Ohio River. I rather think he walked
to Point Pleasant. Now if this is our Andrew son of
Nicholas and Mary Levis Friend, son of John and Anna
Coleman Friend, son of Nicholas and Anna ? Friend that
we find in Gallia Co., Ohio here is what I have
found 1810 Early Ohio Census Andrew Friend,
Augustine Friend 1st, Augustine 2nd, and Augustine 3rd
all were listed in Washington Co., Ohio, Gallipolis
Twp
Unless Marion is right. (Letter dated 5 Aug 1979)
Im doubtful if Andrew was married more than once he
was too busy rovering around until he married
Elizabeth Peragin. (Andrew Jr. could have been
Augustine Jr. son Andrew too Just a guess I hope
to find the right answers and get the right children
to the right parents

Letter from Marion Johnson to Iona Leach:

Dated: 20 Oct 1980 --

I think that Nicholas IIs son Andrew was the one
who married Elizabeth Peragen, but I cant prove it.
He would have been much older than she was she may
have been a second wife. The Colonels ancestor
Samuel L. Friend was born 1768 George was b. 1775.
The only possible place I can make them fit is as
Andrews sons by a first marriage. Andrews older
brother Augustine had a son Andrew, but he was still
living in Monongalia Co. W. Virginia when your Andrew
Friend and Elizabeth were in Gallia County. Ive
proof of all this from unpublished deeds, court
records, and tax lists.

Letter received by FFAA to Iona Leach

Dated: 15 Mar 1981

The first religious services were held at the home
of Andrew Friend by Elder Fueston, a Missionary
Baptist, who was the first minister in the township

Earlier, Andrew and a company of young composed of
Daniel Boone, Robert Stafford, James Burford, and
Varbidder hunted game and trapped on Raccoon Creek;
they became a terror to the Indians in the territory.
Their adventures took them from W. Va. Kanawha Valley
and southeastern Ohio

A Nicholas Friend and sons resided on Potomac River
in Va. during the French-Indian war. In 1764, John
and Andrew, his sons, and young Gabriel set out to
find new site. The following year, John Sr. and bro.
Andrew and Chas. Friend, all brothers, two women and
children set out for Friendsville, Md. (Garrett Co.).
One record states that Andrew went on to Pt. Pleasant
on the Ohio River. I realize that families have mixed
up the records of these, ANDREWS have become confused
thru the years.
