There is an automatic source for each name, event, fact and note if a GEDCOM
file is imported by FTM. Unwanted Master Source (file name) can be deleted
using Edit, Edit Master Source in FTM 8 or later but the file name is left
in each note.

FTW.INI file can be edited if the researcher does not want automatic
sources.

A source can be entered in FTM even if date and location are blank. A word
in the date field is the same as a date. My preference is to estimate dates
based on best available information and use Guess or similar for the master
source. Then I have a way to search sources for people who might have been
alive at the time of a census. -- Elizabeth
