One of the disadvantages of an all-names FTM file over 10,000 names is the
limitation in file splitting options and a second is the difficulty in
tracing data entry mistakes.
Detailed directions are in the onscreen Help and online Knowledge Base for
FTM. Please include the version of FTM and version of Windows with requests
for help on any mailing list. Sometimes the version makes a difference for
the correct answer.
Display an ancestor box chart with the exact individuals displayed (will not
include second spouses) and then use copy/export INDIVIDUALS. Save as GEDCOM
with FTW destination for maximum details.
Custom Report, Outline Tree and Kinship report can also be used to start
partial FTM files. All-in-One is the best method for files under 10,000
names to split mother's relatives from father's relatives.
Most common mistake is selecting copy/export FILE (whole file.) Some of the
old versions of FTM did not allow a branch to be saved as a GEDCOM directly
so a branch FTW file had to be saved first.
If your file has any private data or custom facts, additional steps may be
required. You can check the GEDCOM text file in a word processor before
sending. -- Elizabeth, customer since FTM DOS 1989

How do I make a gedcom of just the ancestors of an individual in my master
file? All the geds I have ever made have been descendants of an individual.
Now I have "met" a fellow researcher with whom we share many connections,
but I don't want to send him my 52,300 person file. just the ancestors that
apply to him.
