In my experience cd's do NOT have to be formatted. Just write the data to
the cd.

You need a separate software program, such as, "Roxio-Drag-to-Disc", to
format a CD.

Over the years, I have experienced many problems, and frustrations, trying
to format CD"s. Note: you need to purchase the CD-R (rewrite) CD's, in
order to format, and do modifications, later, etc. However, after waiting
45 minutes, I continuously was told the Disc could not be formatted, etc,
even though I had purchased the best quality CD-R's. These problems, and
frustrations, led me to go to an external hard drive.

With an external hard drive, you don't have any of these problems, or
concerns. Once you copy to your external hard drive, you can make whatever
changes you want, whenever you want. The bonus is you don;t need, or have, a
cupboard full of CD's, that you may not be able to modify, if you have to
reinstall to your computer in an emergency. I feel an external hard drive
resolves all the issues with CD's, and gives you a better product(copy), in
the process.
