I am "in software", and have been for many years. I completely disagree
with the analysis you presented above, from those "several people" who
are "in software". IMO the analysis fails because....
There are already many native programs that run on a mac and run very
well, including a mac version of m'soft office by Gate's crew. There was
already "no incentive" to write mac programs because the market was
so small. If Apple sells more macs because of emulation, then there
will be more reasons to write mac native programs, just because they will
run faster than the same program being emulated. The mac is not just a
Windows PC. In fact it isn't one at all.
It just can run windows programs with an emulator. Since it is also
UNIX underneath the Apple Gui, it should be able to run UNIX
programs with a simple recompile and re-linking. There are also now,
tons of programs written in Java which are all designed to be platform
independent.
Oh, and BTW, more does not equal better. It is true that there are
more Genealogy programs that run on Wintel boxes natively than
there are Genealogy programs that run on macs natively. But IMO the
best program on any platform is Reunion which runs on a mac, and
only on the mac. I've tried many different Genie programs for Windoze,
Mac, LINUX and UNIX, and my favorite is Reunion.
I use FTM for windows because my family believes they need to run
on Windows and I don't yet have the money to get a new mac to run
in addition to the family's Windoze 'puter.
However, that will most likely change in the not-to-distant future.
