I have done that, with the Polk County Court House, in Crookston, MN. The folks
there are very helpful.

I have not asked for Marriage records in either the Polk Co. historical society or
the Fergus Falls, MN one; so can't say anything about that.

The one in Fergus has been very helpful.

While the retracing of information is always a good idea it is not always
practable. With courthouse marriage records in Texas being $8 and that
consisting of a boilerplate statement with only a few facts diffferent it is often
reasonable to check the Marriage Index and note the information there. On a few
occasions we had a list of around 100 names a copy of each would run $800.
Death Certificates from the County run $23 each and you are not allowed to
look at these but must submit a written request with specific information to get
one.

I have also made sure to take daytrips around the state and picked up
documentation from the local county courthouses for two reasons, you can still look
at their books and therefore can see the correct info, but only need to cite
the book, page, line and the courthouse as the repository. Then only in the
case of direct lines do I pick up copies. And again, as I come in contact
with people who have copies of that documentation we exchange scanned or photo
copies.
