Annie,

A copy-- Just a scanned, emailed to me death cert. copy-- runs about 8
bucks. I know
that a certified copy is quite a bit more expensive. But, even at just $8,
I'd just
as soon get the right person...

The Fergus Falls Historical Society will do look-ups.... Newspaper obits,
etc for $3
per look-up.

I lucked out in that I started my research in the 70s and having read the
two small books I did, started with myself and my husband and ran backwards.
Hence the initial expense being so low. After that, I would take either
Friday or Monday off and take off from the cities to Austin, Albert Lea, LeCenter,
Rochester, etc. early in the morning so I arrived as the county courthouse
opened and would spend the day there. Since I usually did this in the summer,
when the courthouse closed I would head for the cemeteries and walk them.

I learned quickly to go thru the books and copy the info on all people of
the surname I was researching and to do the same with making a list of MIs and
taking photos in the cemeteries. It cut down on the number of return trips I
had to make. Traveling 300 round-trip miles and researching all day and
then tramping cemeteries till dusk was tiring, and the fewer trips I had to
make, the better. But it was still very rewarding. I enjoyed every minute of it
and wish I could afford to take off and do the same in some of the other
states where the families lived, and in Canada. For that matter, to be able to
do as my uncle did in his 70s and backpack Ireland, England and France would
be the best treat I could have, but it is not to be.
