Well, it's a very clever work-around. if I ever get my copy of 2008, I'll try it out.

That isn't the way it seems to work. There is no reason for the report to go bye-bye. The people are just another formatting variable. Have you ever created a book and added images to it and later delete some of the images? The book simply tells you it can't find the images but continues formatting the book without the images. Same thing happens with people.

I don't think the reports use pointers per se for the people. I suspect they use the individual record ID which in FTM 16 and earlier just happens to be the same as the individual Reference number which is transferred in the GEDCOM file. If a reference ID specified for the report cannot be found that individual is simply bypassed.

You can't generate a report or book until at least one individual is in the file. I haven't tried this but I suspect that if you added only one person who was not in the previous copy of the file, you would simply get an empty report.
