I've "rescued" an old photograph of Freddie & Rosie LONGEN which was taken
at the Steinhauer Studio in Grotton, South Dakota. The photograph appears
to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with the children ranging in age
from infant to 3 years old. In addition to their names, someone has also
written "John LONGEN" and "Grandpa's brother's kids" and "Madeline NOSBUSH'S
Dad" on the back of the photograph.

Based on limited research and thanks to a local area researcher I have been
able to gather the following information regarding this family:

John LONGEN (b. 6 Sept 1866 in Lake Henry, MN) and Justina Christina FUCHS
(b. Aug 1872 in MN) had 5 children including, Frederich Mathias "Fred"
LONGEN b. 16 Feb 1895 in Day Co. SD; Rose Susanna LONGEN b. 2 Dec 1896 in
Day Co SD; Helena Bertha LONGEN b. 11 Feb 1898 in Roberts Co SD; Marie b.
1904; and Agnes b. 1910.

Census records provide the following information:

1900 census of Sisseton Township, SD:

John LONGEN, age 32, born Sept 1867, married 7 years, born MN, parents born
Germany, a Clerk
Christina LONGEN, wife, age 27, born Aug 1872, married 7 years, 3 children/3
living, born MN, parents born Germany
Fredrick LONGEN, son, age 5, born Feb 1895, born SD
Rosia LONGEN, dau, age 4, born Feb 1896, born SD
Helena LONGEN, dau, age 1, born Mar 1899, born SD

1910 census of Nutley Township, SD:

John LONGEN, age 43, married 16 years, born MN, parents born Germany, a
Farmer
Justina LONGEN, wife, age 38, married 16 years, 5 children/5 living, born
MN, parents born Germany
Fred LONGEN, son, age 15, born SD, a Farm Laborer
Rosa LONGEN, dau, age 14, born SD
Hellen LONGEN, dau, age 11, born SD
Mary LONGEN, dau, age 6, born SD
Agnes LONGEN, dau, age 10 months, born SD

1920 census of Webster, SD:

John LONGEN, age 53, born MN, parents born Germany
Justina LONGEN, wife, age 48, born MN, parents born Germany
Fred LONGEN, son, age 24, born SD
Marie LONGEN, dau, age 16, born SD
Agnes LONGEN, dau, age 10, born SD

old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you
