Hi Grahame,
Welcome to FreeBMD
Thanks for your email offering to help FreeBMD. I'm the Volunteer
Co-ordinator and it's my job to find you a Syndicate best suited to your
needs.
It would assist us if you would please complete the Questionnaire below and
return it to me.
We usually work in groups or Syndicates. The Syndicate leader will usually
provide you with raw data or allocate to you specific events to transcribe.
They will assist you generally.
Each Syndicate is transcribing a particular event, - Births, Marriages or
Deaths for a given quarter of a year. You can get more general information
from the FreeBMD website including a list of Frequently Asked Questions.
There are two ways of transcribing the data so it can be uploaded to the
database, by using either SpeedBMD or a spreadsheet programme such as Excel.
The majority of transcribers use SpeedBMD, which is a programme specially
written for the Project. We would recommend that you use this programme
which can be downloaded free from the FreeBMD website. You can get SpeedBMD
here http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/addons/ It includes an exercise which will
enable you to familiarise yourself with the programme
while we are getting you placed.
If you prefer to use a spreadsheet, we can give you advice on the initial
preparation and assistance with uploading if you need it.
You do not need to be online except when uploading to the database.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to come back to me.
Regards
Elinor Wood
Volunteer Co-ordinator
