Subject: Double checking entries

Hi - this is a message for newbies who are transcribing from scans. It
is something that I wish I had known when I first started and hopefully
it may help someone else.

I always wondered how accurate my typing was, even though I checked each
SpeedBMD entry before the last TAB. I thought some must have slipped
by. Well, some did as I found when double checking using the following
method:

I opened the original scan in Imaging (Accessories) at 51% magnification
and sized the window to fit the left side of my screen. It showed one
column of the scan. Then I opened the transcribed file (eg.
68M30081.sca) in Wordpad (Accessories) and sized the window to fit the
right side of my screen. I first used the Replace feature to change
districts that needed commas (such as Bradford Yk. to "Bradford, Yk.")
Then I could check the entries right beside each other using a
straightedge to see if I had actually typed exactly what was on the scan
and repair any mistakes.

I must say that I didn't do too bad, but less than 100% accurate isn't
the best. I found a few typos, mostly things like "Catherine" for
"Catharine" and the odd mistyped page number. But now they are all
being fixed and I think that what is uploaded should be certified error
free.

Happy transcribing
Diana Nadeau
