Subject: Superscript entries

I am transcribing 1850 December Qtr Marriages from fiche of handwritten entries. I have two entries thus:

Downing Margaret Ann Sandoe Redruth IX 296
Downing Margaret Ann Sandoe Redruth IX 295

The first entry has what appears to be a 4 in superscript or a cross adjacent to the entry. I doubt whether WinBMD will accept superscript even if I were sure of the entry. What do I transcribe?
