Subject: Tip of the Day (No. 1) - Type what you see (TWYS)
Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2006 00:26:04 +0100
Hopefully this "Tip of the Day" will be the first of a series to help volunteers who are
transcribing for the FreeBMD Project.
Suggestions for other "Tip of the Day" are welcome. Also any suggested improvement to the wording of
this "Tip of the Day" is also encouraged.
In checking thousands of files uploaded by our transcribers I come across quite a number of
instances of transcribers not following the "Type what you see" (TWYS) rule.
Hints and Help For Beginners at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/beginhelp.shtml and Transcribers'
Knowledge Base at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html are good starting places for
transcribers to get the definitive advice on transcribing.
It is impossible to cover all situations encountered in transcribing the Index.
However recently I have encountered files uploaded by a number of volunteers who have decided to
rearrange the order of records in their files when compared to that in the Index.
1. TWYS still applies even though the records are out of order. Please see
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/vol_faq.html#6x .
I have also recently encountered files which had Alpha Numerals for the Volume Code even though the
Index contained Roman Numerals.
2. TWYS still applies, if the Index shows Roman Numerals then type Roman Numerals, Similarly, if
the Index shows Arabic Numerals then type Arabic Numerals.
Further information regarding this is contained in the Hints and Help For Beginners at:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/beginhelp.shtml . The WinBMD and speedBMD help files are also well worth
a visit since they compliment our Hints and Help For Beginners.
