As you may know, rootsweb changed their mailing list software recently.

The new software operates in slightly different ways, which will take some getting used to. We also need to tweak the lists slightly.

The changes have meant that some mail that would normally never hit the list gets out onto the list, and that some replies that were intended to go to one user go to the whole list.

This is unfortunate, and will be less of a problem as time goes on and people get used to the new software.

I would ask that people take care when replying to ensure that their reply is going to the correct place.

I would also ask that where a message does get to the list that shouldn't have, people just ignore it, as a couple of "why did I get this" messages sent to the thousands of subscribers to the list simply increases the problem.

Dear Beryl,

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to transcribe for FreeBMD.

I hope you will join us and look forward to working with you.

In essence the way the site works is that you register with FreeBMD, and
join a syndicate such as this one. Once registered you are allocated one or
more
scans and transcribe them using a clever piece of software called WinBMD.

The scans we are currently working through are single pages of handwritten
index entries each with some 42 lines.

You then check your transcription against the original, to spot typing
errors or lines accidentally left out, using a piece of software called
BMDverify, and correcting the errors on WinBMD, and upload your
transcription to the FreeBMD web site. About once a month all the new
transcriptions are added in to the huge database.

My role as coordinator is to get members of my team started, deal with any
problems they encounter, keep track of how their transcriptions are going,
and allocate extra scans for transcription.

------------------------------the important next
step----------------------------------------------
----------------------
To enable you to upload records to FreeBMD you will need to register.
Please make sure you are connected to the internet and then click on the
link below.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/join?coord=b_m_jones

Here you will be asked to complete a Registration page. You will be asked to
choose your own "submitter identifier" (submitterID) which will identify you
to FreeBMD - make it something you can remember and type easily. Note,
however, that if you want to remain anonymous it should not identify you.

You will then receive a SubmitterID e-mail with details of how to complete
the registration process. Please follow these instructions as soon as
possible.

Once you have completed the registration process you will then be authorised
to submit data for the project.

Please print out your Registration details and keep them in a safe place for
future reference.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------
Once you have registered I will receive a notification. Before I send
you details of where and how to get your first scan I would like you to send
me an e-mail saying that you are ready to commence transcribing. Please
include with that e-mail your selected FreeBMD password as I will
occasionally have need to access your completed files.

We are currently working on the index of Births for the December quarter
1854. The information is scanned from handwritten pages and is quite easy to
read for the most part.

It is downloaded from a part of the FreeBMD site and the files are about
500kb per page.

The following link gives some guidance for new transcribers.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/7steps.shtml

Some of the detail refers to an old package, SpeedBMD, rather than WinBMD
which is much easier to use and more foolproof. I strongly recommend WinBMD.

You may also care to look at the web site I have set up for this Syndicate
at

http://www.bmj2004.com

If you have any problems with the two-stage registration process, or with
any aspect of the transcription process, please get straight back in touch
with me. I would far rather deal with queries as they arise.

Best regards.

Brian Jones.
