This district was actually 'City of London' and that is how you will find it
in the FreeBMD list of districts.

See http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/city%20of%20london.html for
a description of this district.

You are correct that it existed until 1869 and from 1.1.1870 was replaced by
London City district, which also included the earlier districts of East
London and West London.

If you can't find a district in FreeBMD by the name you are familiar with,
normally you try searching on the county the district was in.
However there does seem to be a small problem with the district list at
present as there does not seem to be a County choice currently available for
London before 1889.
However searching on London(1889-Mar1965) does actually find districts
including City of London from July 1837 onwards.
