Perhaps you can explain why some individuals experience problems using
WinBMD on Vista and others don't.

I'm guessing more individuals can get WinBMD to work on Vista than those who

As one of those who experienced difficulties with a newly installed Vista PC
but by switching on UAC I have had no subsequent problems. Completed files
land up in WinBMD Output folder as intended.

This would possibly suggest WinBMD isn't the problem but more the Vista
setup process.

To those still experiencing problems it must be very frustrating but
understanding why some experience problems and others don't may lead to a
permanent solution.

I know this is only partially related to transcribing, but it seems to be
rearing its head more frequently.

This is just an educated guess, but if you have UAC control on, vista will
probably block access to c:\program files\WinBMD\Output as it is deemed to
be in the 'system' area and therefore you shouldn't be fiddling with it.
Microsoft trying to be helpful again :)

Is the author of the program on the list ? Is Ian Brooke still looking after
WinBMD ? Does he have any comments on why it isn't currently compatible with
Vista ? It shouldn't be too hard to get it to work properly and this problem
is just going to rear its head more and more as people's XP PCs die and then
get new ones running Vista (for what its worth, I run a virtual PC session
of XP under vista to do my transcribing just to get around the problem!). If
someone has the source code, I'm willing to take a look at it to try and
establish why its not running properly - maybe its time for a .Net version
?, and I'm sure there are other coders on the list that could assist.

I have just installed WinBMD on my Vista PC to try and see if I had a
problem as well. I have imported a part completed file from my XP laptop and
this opened no problem and I have been able to add more lines and save the
work. I have discovered that Vista saves the output in
C:\Users\Accountname\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\WinBMD\Output
rather than the default C:\Program Files\WinBMD\Output which may explain why
some are unable to find the saved files. I have not yet tried an upload
using Vista so I can't comment on that yet, but I don't seem to have the
same problems as others with transcribing
