After posting my problem, I checked out the FreePages FAQ and discovered
the right way to do it -- and it works, on the main page. However the
identical code fails to work on some of the other pages and I still have
not figured out why, since I simply copied and pasted the lines that worked
onto all the others to replace the JavaScript that would not work...

Sounds like we have the same criteria! I do have one image though (the 1894
family group of my grandfather) that even as a JPG file is more than
176,000 bytes. I suspect that it's still in 24-bit grayscale format and
needs to be trimmed back considerably. I had to do extensive work on it to
recover the faded image and probably forgot to reduce the color count to
256. Most, though, are relatively small. I plan to at least triple the
number of images eventually, so they have to be quick...
