I have a simpler suggestion about your background problems. And a point
that may apply to other newcomers.

It is not essential to set up a fancy background for your new web page.
Just start with a simple light color until you have procedures worked
out and understand better how things are done. A simple even background
is better than cluttered up backgrounds that are hard to read. I think
most backgrounds I see fall in or near that latter category.
