There IS an index.html in your genealogy area. Unfortunately, it has
nothing but end tags--no start tags, and no contents.
Do this: surf to my home page (or anybody else's). Pick a page that
looks simple, and save it to your local disk. By coincidence, I posted an
insultingly detailed procedure for doing this earlier today (something
about descendant charts in the subject line).
Use whatever editor you like, and change the file's contents to suit you.
DO NOT DELETE OR ADD any of the following strings:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
</BODY>
</HTML>
Deleting other tags might cause minor problems, but they're easily found
and fixed. Plus, you HAVE to change other tags to change content.
Deleting these can really confuse you if you're inexperienced, plus, your
page MUST have one and only one of each of the above, and they must be in
the order shown.
Rename it index.html and do the upload again. If WS_FTP gives you any
trouble, try the alternate method at
http://freepages.rootsweb.com/fileman.html
*IF* you have a page on your local disk, and it looks good in your browser
BEFORE uploading, then upload that instead. But make sure you're
uploading the same file name in the same directory (folder) that you
tested in your browser.
Once you get a page or two up and working, you will start to learn
shortcuts. But the above is one way to get started.
