Also, the post that the list members received does not have the routing
headers that show the other ISP what route it took to get to rootsweb.
Not only does this info help find the culprit, it helps avoid hanging an
innocent person whose name may have been forged as the apparent sender.

Since you are using smartlist, do you also use procmail? If so, a recipe
can be written to detect certain words and re-route the message. (In fact
I can give you such a recipe, since I have received attacks like that by
personal email. I felt like taking a bath after writing the stupid
script.)
