Actually, John -- this is my preferred way to display photos. However, the
original challenge was to display the photos such that the visitor did not
have to use the 'back' button to go back to the thumbnails.

There are several programs which will generate the thumbnails & related
pages. One which I'm playing around with now is called 'Thotor' which can
be downloaded from http://www.dominativ.com/thotor/ and is free, not
shareware. One thing I like about it is that you can create html templates
and thotor will build the html pages -- both the thumbnail page and the
target photo pages -- automagically. Thotor also automatically resizes
your photos and creates the thumbnails. See where I've used it at
http://elsi.rootsweb.com/april-2001/

Another tool I played around with was WebThumbnailer. I like the program,
however it is shareware. And, when I go to the author's web site at
http://www.majordomo.net/dragonworks/ it says "DragonWorks will soon be
shutting down". I'm just not excited about paying for a program if the
author is shutting down. You can, however, see the results at
http://elsi.rootsweb.com/honeymoon/photos

I also like the jClicker Slide Show. jClicker is free for the taking, but
it isn't automatic at all. jClicker provides templates which you then
update to create a slide show. You can download jClicker from
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/proj/jclicker/index.html and see it in
action at http://elsi.rootsweb.com/SlideShows/GCFlowers/ --- One
warning: jClicker does not work on FreePages. There's something about the
way the pages are served (or the ads inserted) that prevents the
DHTML/javascript from building the page. So this one is for your web sites
that *aren't* on FreePages.

I'm sure that a clever programmer could produce a program which would build
pages which have the thumbnails & the target photo on the same page. I
just am not the programmer to do this. (I'm a power user these days!)

Regards,
Elsi
