Hi Carol!

Document images can be very tricky, here's why. If you take a photograph
and scan it at 100 dpi, you will get a small picture which can be
slightly grainy, but it is still pretty useful. If you took the same
picture and scanned it at 200 dpi (Also known as density) it would be
much bigger and much smoother, but the file size will be much bigger.

Documents however, especially handwritten documents are not as forgiving.
If you scan a document at 100 dpi, the writing will be very hard to
read, especially if they have poor or very fancy handwriting with all
kinds of flourishes. And if you try to blow up the document from 100% to
200% from your photo program then the document will pixalate and look
even worse. (I transcribe census for USGenWeb, I have learned these
things from bitter experience). Your files are large because of the
quality they were produced at so that they would be readable.

Even though they are taking longer, be patient your viewer will be able
to read these images comfortable. Also could you give us a link to those
census pages so we could look at them please. Hope this helps.
