Yvonne: For your account on www.rootsweb.com, you'll find more experienced
help on the Rootsweb-Help-L mailing list. This mailing list
(Freepages-Help-L) is frequented by people who have accounts on the
Freepages server and may not know how to help where things are somewhat
different between the two servers.

After deleting the link, you uploaded the replacement file -- with a
different file name. On most web servers on the network (including
Rootsweb), file names are case sensitive. Therefore, even if your own
computer treats Index.htm and index.htm as the same, the web server sees
these as two completely different file names.
In order to select a file to display when your URL contains only a
directory name, your file must be named index.htm or index.html -- spelled
exactly like that. Your file is now named Index.htm and will not be
selected to be displayed as a default and therefore the server will show a
directory listing.
Rename your file back to the all lower-case name and it will then be
displayed as the default when the URL says, http://www.rootsweb.com/~alabgs/
