While parts of what you state in your message are accurate not all of it is
in that copyright is complex and much would depend upon when and where
something was originally published or even if it ever was published, whether
copyright was claimed, or renewed, etc. It is difficult to generalize about
copyright. Also, if something once was under copyright but is now in the public
domain--it doesn't much matter if it "some time or other" was. Probably an in
depth discussion of copyright would be best carried out, if desired, on the
COPYRIGHT-L list rather than this one.
