File Transfer Protocol - ftp

the web is just files on computers(servers). ftp transfers files from
your computer to the server.

when somebody connects to your rootsweb site, they are actually
connecting to the htm(l) file that resides in your username directory
on one of the rootsweb servers.

you use ftp to transfer that htm(l) file and associated files and
images from your computer to rootsweb's computer.

>I have Windows XP, do I need a program to transfer files?
no,

you can connect to the online file manager that rootsweb provides at

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi
