The issue is not the need of a plug-in. RootsWeb has given us the reason
which has to do with the fact that the advertising is not displayed on the
PDF pages when you view them. While it is possible to refer directly to
the image files (http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~elsi/eduun006.gif
) it is more common to utilize those images within an HTML page
(http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~elsi/clip-art.html ) which will
contain the advertising banners.
RootsWeb has stated that its servers are not to be used to house files
which are primarily for download and not for online viewing. Executables,
some music formats, and PDFs are explicitly forbidden. With images, the
presumption is that they are being displayed within an HTML page. If
RootsWeb staff were to discover a site where that was not the case, the
webmaster would be contacted to correct the problem.
While we may not agree with the rules at RootsWeb, they are quite
reasonable - particularly when you look at what you pay to use the web
hosting facilities. If you want to have PDF files in your web content,
simply host them elsewhere and link to them from your RootsWeb pages. My
new DSL connection came with an Earthlink account which provides web
space. So, if I were wanting to provide some of my data in PDF format, I'd
just store the PDFs there and link to them.
