You should have a folder on your hard drive where your website
resides. The first page - your "home page" - MUST be named index.htm
or index.html for it to show up when someone types in the url to your
site. Many of us name the folder for our website the same name as the
site - genealogy_html or family-name or whatever so that you know
what that folder contains. The other files in that folder can be
named whatever you want although short, lowercase, no spaces are good
rules to follow.
The title you give your page - that content that appears between the
<title>name of page</title> is what determines where your page is
going to show up in the freepages index. If you name it Home Page it
will be indexed under H for Home. If you name it The Jones Family, it
will show up under T for The. So pick your name carefully.
You need to set your Web Editing Program up to publish to the correct
location. You also need to make sure your firewall - if you use one -
gives permission to your editing program to access the Internet. I
don't use PageMill or Claris Home Page but the setup should be
somewhat the same.
Remote Website Location: ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.com
FTP Directory: genealogy_html or whichever one you are publishing to.
Make sure your username and password are correct.
