Should you be happy with using Windows XP rather than Windows Vista, then the good news is that MicroSoft will now continue supporting XP with security updates etc. through to April 30, 2014.

As of July 01, 2008 the Windows XP Operating Systrem will be available for download from MS provided you own a copy of Windows Vista. This will allow you to downgrade under the terms of the Windows software licence.
