I think it is a firewall issue. I am using a new (to me) machine
in a new environment, and this was the first time I tried ftping.
I later tried other sites, and had the same problem. Sorry to
have bothered everyone.

Command-line is easier. If I weren't too lazy to lookup the ftp
protocol, I'd try telnetting to port 21.
