With WinXP, you can use the external just like the harddrive. You can
use the Move or Copy commands. You can delete files from the ext.
drive etc. You can keep the same files and folders on C/my docs and
the external. -- whatever you choose!
TIP: NO, no files automatically update to the external, UNLESS you
have opened and edited the file that while it is ON the external.
TIP::: If you only have 1 copy of X File(s) ALWAYS do COPY (rather
than Move). If you use COPY, you can check that the move went ok,
then delete it off of My Documents.
TIP::: NEVER "MOVE" or "DELETE" the actual folder called MY
DOCUMENTS... Windows needs that folder. Instead, copy/move / delete
the items inside My Douments.
TIP::: If you have a ton of folders/files to copy, do just some at a
time (1 column or 2 columns). It'll go faster.
TIP: If you decide some sub-folders can be deleted from My Docs AFTER
going to the external, use COPY to the external, check that they went
over ok... THEN, delete that folder from c:/My Docs.
Why don't you spen a couple days thinking about what exactly you want
on the external. Do you want to use it as "back up" to
-- My Documents
--My Pictures
--My Video
--My Music
(which can be copied separately... or just copy the whole My Documents folder?)
I use my external as
1. a backup for the full & current My Documents on my C drive
2. a respository for multiple folders / files starting with the name
My Pictures -- example:
(folder) My Pictures_family_mom
(file) My Pictures_family_mom_02-02-1960.jpg
3. a respository for all the graphics / backgrounds I like
4. a back-up, separate from My Docs, for My Webs (so it's in 2 places, in
My Documents/My Webs and in
My Webs (separate folder)
Then I backup BOTH of those from the current My Webs folder on C drive
5. A place to install SOME programs and run them from the external.
Make a habit of backing up to the external at least every 3 to 7
days-- the more frequent the better.
I LOVE external drives. I'll never, ever back-up to CDs ever
again--they fail. Thumb drives fill up too fast for me.
Extenals are cheap, big sized, so easy to use and... have never failed for me.

Both my Family Tree Maker and the Backup are in "My Documents" at the moment. Do I just send the Back up to the external hard drive and delete it from "My Documents"? If so, by doing this, will it automatically update on the external hard drive, or do I have to save a copy of the treemaker to the hard drive, each time I make an entry.
