Subject: [FreeHelp] FTP Access
Date: Sun, 8 Mar 2009 00:01:27 EST
Further on the FTP access problem that both Marcia Farina and I reported on 3
and 4 March:
When we access an FTP site and then attempt to open it in IE, the following
error messages appear:
"The folder 'ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/genealogy' is
read-only because the proxy server is not set up to allow full access.
"To move, paste, rename, or delete files, you must use a different proxy.
For information on changing your proxy, contact your administrator."
I am using Windows Vista with the XP downgrade and IE 7,0. I have checked the
security and IE browse settings, to no avail. How can the proxy server be
It appears to be a local problem, because several times I was able to work
around it after rebooting,
and entering manually either
_ftp:// (ftp://) or
so long as a dialog box appeared for username and password. However, afterr
uploading to a single folder, I could not afterwards move to another folder
without getting the same error messages.
At other times, an ftp page appeared without a dialog box first calling for
username and password, but attempts to open it in Internet Explorer using the
"Page" option produced the error messages again. This also happened when a
saved URL link was used to access the ftp folder.
It seems as if Windows is storing the password in association with a
previously used ftp URL, but in a manner that limits access to read-only--perhaps due
to one of those automatic Windows updates, since things last worked properly
I have been reluctant to clear temporary memory and lose all my other stored
passwords--there must be well over a hundred, which I can never find when I
need them--but fear that may be the only way out.
