So is the problem the fact that the scripts were poorly written, or are
written supporting functions that only IE has?

Whatever it is it demonstrates that a site should be tested with
Firefox, IE and Safari and that proprietary calls should not be made.
For a real shocker try looking at some sites on a smart phone (no thanks).

As a standard I also use Ad Blocker Plus, with Firefox, and I am finding
that with it turned on more and more pages on www.nytimes.com just
appear as a blank until I turn it off and reload the page. I hate that,
but hate ads more, especially the ones that slide in. If a site is going
to be running ads on it you should also make sure that the page will
appear if the ad is blocked.
