They are likely not in the business to be selling but rather luring you into
clicking onto their links. Doing so serves a purpose for them either for
rankings or worse, searching for targets for malware and viruses. It's good
to remember there is usually a motive for everything you find on the
Internet, even if it looks to be a mistake. This is my two cents.

noticed a similar thing yesterday when I googled "William Lovell Dobie"
(with the quotes) to see if my father's name appears in Google Books. I was
returned four pages of "hits" but all of them are phony except for the first
four links on the first page. Most of these websites don't seem to be
selling anything but are just a jumble of text, links and photos which are
meaningless. They seem to have grabbed stuff from hundreds of real websites
and mashed them all together. Chas. Dobie

Pam,

The Freepages agreement states that each user may have only one
account, and that account names can NOT be changed. See

http://accounts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index.cgi?op=show&page=freeacct.htm&agree=1

But is there not a facility to contact customer care and ask them to
change the account name, or to cancel the account so that a more
appropriate name can be selected??

There can not be many companies that would be so rigid that they would
deny a reasonable request.

I doubt it since it is clearly states in the agreement you have to
agree to before the account is granted.

NOTE: Limit one FREEPAGES account per user. You may NOT use a
FREEPAGES account for file storage. Do NOT upload MP3, zip, mpg, avi,
ram files, etc. as your account will be closed.

PLEASE NOTE: Your account name will become part of your URL, as in
http://freepages.communityname.rootsweb.com/~acctname/. Account name
must be at least 4 characters long and must consist only of lower
case letters and numbers, but may not begin with a number. No spaces
or characters (such as - _ / . ') are allowed. Select your account
name carefully as names of accounts can NOT be changed and you may
not close an account and open a new one.

When I first started my account, it was for genealogy. I later moved
it to paid hosting. While I still had the freepages account, the
focus of the site changed. So gearyfamily which worked when I started
was changed to reflect genealogy computer tips for rootsweb users.

Which is why users are told to consider carefully the name they choose.

Pamela,

I don't understand your exact concern but to clarify:

1. "freepages" allows only ONE "account" (~youraccount)

2. "freepages" has, I think, 9 "categories" -- each acts as a separate
"website" BUT ALSO (see #3)

3. You can cross-link all of the category websites into 1 bigger "website"

4. If you use the "miscellaneous" (misc) category, your URL will be shorter
and "misc" can act as the "main page" for all the category websites.

For example, I use the categories of family, genealogy, school-alumni,
religions, and misc. Others on this List told me I could use the "misc"
site to make it easier for visitors because "misc" has the shorter URL.
See http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~florian/
As you see, on that page I give the URLs for each freepages category that I
use (plus one account I have on the "rootsweb" server).
As well as giving links to all my "sites", I also USE the misc website for a
different type of content.

So in effect, I have 5 "webs" in freepages by using the different
"categories" they offer. I don't remember all the other ones, but 2
others off the top of my head are "nostalgia" and "military".

You can make a pretty big overall "site" just using the freepages
"categories" offered in each person's (one-only) account. So you might want
to check it out a bit more before feeling disappointed or frustrated about
the account name you requested.

Judy,

if you want the shortest url, it is:-

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~florian/

Try it yourself.

Even better, if you use the "misc" folder to hold your main index.htm(l)
file you don't have to put it in the URL - for example,
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/
<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>; takes you to
http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/index.htm I use
that as my "home" page, with links on it going to other pages.

Kind Regards,
Wendy

How does this work? The link opens Judy's site but when I substitute my
site's name for "florian", the page is directed to a general index page
with my url. Selecting the "parent directory" link opens the "Freepages:
Free Unlimited Web Space" page.

Ian,

The Freepages agreement is a CONTRACT, signed by the person
requesting the account. As Pat Geary pointed out, the requester must
agree to the terms of the contract before the account is granted.
