Surname: Ray, Blanton, Hewett

According to "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" Volume 3, page 266, written
by Folks Huxford, Rufus Ray was the oldest child of Hiram Ray. Rufus was
born 1832 in Barnwell District, South Carolina. Married in Berrien co.,
Ga. to Nancy Hewett on 12/14/1862, daughter of James Hewett.

Rufus Ray appears in the 1860 census of Berrien county in the home of his
father, Hiram Ray, age 46; mother Rachel, age 43; Rufus, age 22; Bradford,
age 20; Benjamin, age 16; Hiram D, age 14; Levina, age 12; Joan, age 10;
Josiah, age 8; Rachel, age 3, and Thomas F, age 3 months.

1870 Berrien co. Census lists Rufus Ray as a seperate household, age 31.
Also in the home is Nancy Ray, age 23, born in SC; Rachel, age 6; and Hiram,
age 2 months.

1880 Berrien co. Census list Rufus Ray, age 37, born in SC; Nancy, age
36, born in SC; Rachel, age 16; Priscilla, age 13; Hiram age 10; Elias,
age 7; Rayford, age 4; and Kizzia, age 1.

Rufus Ray enlisted in E Company, 54th Inf Reg. Ga. on 5/16/1862 as a Private
and claimed residence as Berrien Co., Ga. He was discharged on disability
at Savannah, Ga. on 4/15/1863. Source: Roster of Confederate Soldiers of
Ga 1861-1865, published by Longino & Porter on 1955-1958.
