The Obituary
George W. Utley, Sr., son of the late Zollie and Fannie Utley was born in
Sardis, Georgia and at a very young age his parents moved to Philadelphia,
PA.
George was reared in a Christian family, he attended Sunday School and
became an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Academically he attended
the public schools of Philadelphia and graduated with honors from Central
High School.
George served in the United States Army during World War II and received
many decorations and citations and he was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon
his return from overseas he became a civilian government employee.
While working as a Unit Supervisor at the Philadelphia Veterans
Administration he met Miss Ella James and on November 5, 1956 they were
united in Holy Matrimony.
We move to Chicago, Illinois in the winter of that year and reminained there
until 1967 at which time all four of us, daughter, Sheila and Baby George,
Jr. returned to Philadelphia. George immediately went to work at OIC and a
short time later he was employed at the United States Post Office where he
remained until he retiring with a total of thirty- four years of government
service.
Documentation will ascertain that Geoge retired but in reality George never
ceased working. He was a carpenter by trade, electrician. photographer,
dappled in the culinary arts and enjoyed long distance driving, which led
him to a position of chauffeur, for Peters Limousine Service. George was a
leading chauffeur, his world wide knowledge, sense of humor and natural gift
of conversation endeared him to his clients family and friends.
George was a member of the United States Supreme Council 33 AASR of Free
Masonry Prince Hall Affiliation, Member of DeMolay Consistory #1 was
affiliated with numerous Fraternal and Civil Organizations such as the
American Legion and the VFW.
Throughout his career no matter how far he traveled upon returning to
Philadelphia he always returned to Shiloh Baptist Church. There was an aura
that emanated from George hat extended throughout the community in which he
lived and the same aura prevailed in his home. He was a devoted husband,
father and grandfather - to know him was to love him. He and cousin Valena
Wright enjoyed reading " Footsteps On The Sand."
On Friday, September 20, 1985 at 1:30 P.M. at the German town Hospital there
was only one set of footprints on the sand as our Lord and savior Jesus
Christ carried George Washington Utley to a place of peace and Eternal rest.
George leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Mrs. Ella Utley; three
children, Sheila Danette Utley,George W. Utley, Jr., both of Philadelphia,
PA., and Janice Sledge, Baltimore, MD.; two grandchildren; three sisters

Subject:UTLEY Family
Is anyone researching the UTLEY family name in and around Burke Co. GA? I
am looking for information on one Henry UTLEY born about 1832. He is said
to have died 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg. I am descended from W. Adolphus
UTLEY whom I believe to be a son of Henry UTLEY. W.A.UTLEY married MARY
JANE QUICK and they had two children, Daisy Eva (my grandmother) and
Cameron. Other than a few dates concerning my grandmother this is all the
information I have. Thanks in advance.
