Hi Folks,

This message was originally sent to Niles Reddick by Warnock
<>. This involves families in Burke County
and whose ancestry was mostly that of German-speaking Swiss immigrants
who settled along the Savannah River valley.

Any of you guys have info on a William Gray in the Burke County-Jefferson
County-Augusta Georgia and/or Aiken-Beech Island South Carolina area in the
1700's and early 1800's? He may have been the son of a James Gray, who
married Mary Ann *Tobler*. She was the daughter of Ulrich *Tobler* and
Helena
*Zubly*, who were the children of some of the original Swiss immigrants
into
the New Windsor and Purrysburg settlements along the SC side of the
Savannah
River.

----------

I've got Jean Strickland's book on the New Windsor / Fort Moore
settlement of Swiss and other families at Beech Island.

There were lawsuits between some of the Grays and some other descendants
of Clarke / Tobler / Zubly and the children of Peter Readick / Reddick.

Oh, this is bound to get confusing, as there were multiple Ulrich
Toblers, Helena Zublys, and various Tobler women - all interrelated...

I've looked at the Grays included in Jean Stickland's book.

The closest to a William Gray that I've found is a *William Gray Miller*
(August 9, 1845 - October 23, 1911) who married Elizabeth Martha
Lawrence Parker (1847 - August 6, 1914). William Gray Miller was the
son of William Miller (January 17, 1796 - July 31, 1862) and Caroline
Louisa Gray. They married on January 5, 1843.

Carolina Louisa Gray was the daughter of John Jamieson Gray (born
December 28, 1774) and Eliza *Sturzenegger* (September 15, 1786 -
September 16, 1811). They were married on September 27, 1803.

John Jamieson Gray was the son of James Gray (died February 20, 1804,
Burke Co.) and Mary Ann *Tobler *(died 1827). They were married April
2, 1770.

That's as close to a William Gray as I've found in Jean Strickland's
book on the Swiss folks of New Windsor. Perhaps William Gray Miller was
named for an uncle? Maybe his mother Carolina Louisa Gray had a brother
so named...

Does anyone on the GABURKE or GA-DEUTSCH lists have any further
information on this William Gray that Warnock
<> is investigating?

Thanks for any help that anyone may be able to offer.
