Hi and Thank you. I have found some information on my Mizell family since I last posted this quiry. The Gowen Research Foundation contacted me and told me that Cession Gowen was actually a Melungeon, not Indian. That her Gowen family is actually one of the most dominate, well known Melungeon families.
I do have a pretty good listing of the Mizell family, I am still putting it together some. My grandfather, Joseph Carl O'Berry, Cessions's grandson, is adiment about his family being Cherokee, but that was often a story told to describe their dark indian like features. Agnes, Cessions's daughter, was very dark complected and I can see why that story would have been accepted when told. Carl is fair complected but with stern features and he had jet black hair, it turned white at a young age.
I would like to share the information that you have on my family, are you a relative as well ? I would be glad to share with you what I have as well if you are interested.
