Subject: Catoosa County Question: I'm stumped!!!
Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002 00:59:13 EST

Hi Catoosa County researchers,

I just subscribed to this list and thought I would put my question out
there for all of you to see/look at. Please answer if you have any advise on
how to proceed with my question.

I have my maternal family, the PITTS, who lived in Catoosa County and
Chatooga County, definetely in 1854, and probably before it was even Catoosa
County. But I am totally stumped on how to proceed with these people. I
can't find anything else about them....all I really have "documentation-wise"
are these land records from Catoosa County, which I copied when visiting the
court house there in 1993.

Here's what I know:

John Pitts was mentioned in Catoosa County land Records (59-9-4) w/ a Lucy
Pitts (mother?), who lived in Chatooga County at the time, on 25 March 1854
he had a promissory note for 150 acres of land with her, situated in the
ninth District, known and distinguished as in the plan of said district as
lot 59.
Then, on May 2, 1854, in Catoosa County land records this same John
Pitts deeded over to his wife and their son Charles M. Pitts a "one hundred
and sixty acre lot (more or less) in the ninth district, of the 4th election
of Catoosa County, known and distinguished in the plan of said District as
lot number, 59, containing one hundred and sixty acres, more or less." (THIS
WOULD BE THE SAME PARCEL OF GROUND).

After that, John Pitts dissappears from all records that I have found to this
point, but was he was married to:

Martha W. (?) Pitts: b. c. 1816, Georgia d.

Martha Pitts appears on the 1860, Catoosa Co. Census, P.O. "Snow Hill",
page 1031, house 765, family 741. On the 1870 census she again appears as
head of household, Catoosa Co., p. 307B.

Children:
P1 Charles M. Pitts b.c. 1852
P2 David W. Pitts b.c. 1854
P3 Edmond J. PItts b.c. 1857
P4 Almeda Pitts b.c. 1859

P1 Charles M. Pitts b. c. 1852, GA
I was in correspondence with one of his descendants back when I was at
the College of Wooster in the late 1980s. Evidently, Charles was involved
with a half-Cherokee woman with the last name of Hickey. He lived with his
brother David Washington Pitts for some time, in Bradley County, TN.
Charles M. Pitts had a son named Joe "out of wedlock" with this
_____Hickey. This "Joe" had a daughter named Mary Hickey.

P2 (my g, g-grandfather) David Washington Pitts was born on 21 August 1854,
Catoosa County,GA. David died on 18 June 1936, in Chatanooga, TN. He married
twice: 1)Jerusha Ekess, who he married on 24 October 1886, by T. G. Morgan,
Catoosa County, GA. Jerusha died two years later, on 4 July 1888, and is
buried in the Cloud Springs Cemetery, Rossville, Georgia.
David later remarried to Elizabeth C. Martin. She was born on 25 January
1872, Bradley County, TN. She was the daughter of Samuel L. and Mary
Isabella "Belle" (Moore) Martin. David and Elizabeth were married on 22
December 1890, Charleston, Bradley Co., TN. David died on 18 June 1936, at
the home of his sister Almeda (Pitts) Roberts in St. Elmo's, TN (a suburb of
Chatanooga, TN). Elizabeth died on 4 January 1950, Chatanooga, TN. They
were buried in the Charleston Cemetery.

P3 Edmund J. Pitts b. c. 1857, GA
I know nothing about this other brother.

P4 Almeda Ann Pitts b. c. 1859, GA m. William Porter Roberts
Almeda married William Porter Roberts in Catoosa County, GA, in the
late 1880s. I have the marriege date, but not at recall. They lived in
Chatanooga, TN for their married life, which is where Almeda died.

I would deeply appreciate anyone who could tell me how to proceed with
finding out about the above mentioned early John, Lucy, and Martha (?) Pitts.
I am stumped in Catoosa County, GA, and don't know where to look further to
find earlier info.

Sincerely,
Andy Miller
