Subject: [GACHATHA] Savannah site

Reviewing the 'searches' that have been made on this site thus far, it
seems to me a few suggestions are necessary, so that folks have better
responses from the search-engine.
1. The search-engine has no way of knowing who your ancestors were,
without something more specific than 'my great-grandmother.'
2.Searching for 'obits' or 'marriages' will get you the entire database.
Beneath the search-engine is a manual link, to browse each page of the
database.
3. The K.I.S.S. strategem (keep it simple, stupid) works best, for me.
Last names only, or years, will get you in the ballpark. If I can ever
discover a way to make the site turn a buck, I'll see about adding some
fancy gizmos. Until then, you and I are stuck with the freebies.
4. Each and every record has to be transcribed from a photocopy of the
original, then inserted into place in the database. Most, thankfully,
are short and sweet, some are extremely long and filled with 'rhetoric';
these latter records I abbreviate, figuring that if you want to read
about someone's conjectures of the 'hereafter,' or 'conjugal bliss,' you
can order a copy from a researcher. The idea is to provide patrons with
as much useful information as possible, within the parameters I have to
work with.
5. Savannah is an ambitious and challenging endeavor; in 1895, for
example, 1268 people died there; about 6 month's work to post, so
prepare yourself for the long-haul.
6. Some of the names youre looking for are likely posted on my Florida
sites; 'Broward' is one that I noticed...John Broward came to Florida
from Georgia about 1817, to fight pirates for the Spanish, around
Fernandina.
7. Feel free to email me.
