Francis Marion Foster was first found in the 1850 DeKalb Co., GA, census,
age 9 years, with his mother, Prudence Foster, and 2 older brothers, Green
F. and David B. By 1860, the family had moved to Chattahoochee County,
where they were found in the 1860 census.

Francis Marion enlisted in Co. C, 10th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, in
Cusseta, Chattahoochee County on 18 May 1861. His Compiled Service Record
shows that he was present with his company from that date through 30 June
1861. For the month of December 1861, he was "sick at Hospital Richmond."
His name appeared on a roll of Paroled Prisoners of War by the Provost
Marshall General, Army of the Potomac, dated 30 September 1862, though no
date nor location of capture was found. He died in battle on 16 November
1862 at Sharpsburg, Maryland.

His mother, Prudence Foster, "widow of Chattahoochee County," appeared
before M. J. McKenom (or so the signature appears), Justice of the Inferior
Court of Muscogee County, GA, on 13 October 1864 and made application "for
the purpose of obtaining from the Government of the Confederate States what
monies have been due the said Francis M. Foster at the time of his death for
pay, bounty, or all other monies for his services as a Private Soldier as
aforesaid." There is no indication that she received anything.

On 22 May 1866, an obituary appeared for Francis Marion Foster in one of the
Columbus, GA, newspapers, saying that he had been buried in the Episcopal
Church yard in Sharpsburg. He died at age 21, unmarried and leaving no
descendants.
