I'm trying to ascertain the parentage of my GG William Augustus Westbrook who
lived in the household of Champion and Elvira Westbrook in the 1850 Cherokee
Co. census; listed in 1860 Haralson Co. census in the Canfrow and Elvina
Westbrook household under the name of Augustus W. Pond, along with Elex and
Lucy Pond.
Elex also shows up as a Westbrook in later censuses.

I will be coming to Cherokee Co. in about 10 days to research. I'm thinking
that he was born a Pond and was later adopted by Champion Westbrook. His
name could have been Ponder as the two seem to be interchangeable. Also,
there was a Ponder family living in Cherokee Co. at the same time. A son,
Virgil Milton, married the niece of Champion.

Where would you suggest I look for information...maybe guardianship papers?
I'm leaving New Mexico Wednesday November 1 to start my trip and will check
for e-mails before I leave. I'd really appreciate a quick answer if you can
give me one.
