Re: Oconee County, SC
Nothing on Sharps to share, but my great great grandmother came from that
area (Walhalla, SC) to Canton, GA sometime right after the Civil War. Her
name was Mollie Coward. She has a sketchy and (ahem) possibly colorful
history since we suspect she was pregnant by one William Miles but perhaps
not married to him. She put her baby daughter (my great grandmother,
Samantha,) up for adoption with a Canton couple named Blanton, then headed
west toward the general vicinity of Cairo, Illinois. Her abandond daughter
grew up to marry my great grandfather, Robert Lee Bennett, from the local
Bennett clan, a large family in Cherokee County dating back to the 1830's.
As far as we know, Mollie's SC family tree includes her father, George
Coward, who died in the war, and her mother, Sarah Moody Coward, daughter of
one Martin Moody of SC.
All best,
