Returns on the Estate of the minors of Ellis Willoughby, son of William
Willoughby and Jerusha Jones Willoughby.
Clark County, Georgia
Clark County, Georgia Marriage Records documents the marriage of Ellis
Willoughby and Elizabeth Durham on 31 Dec 1829. No Estate Papers are found
for Ellis. Upon his death, Circa 1841, his brother David was called upon
to be guardian of five known minors. Ruth, Susan, Martha L, Nancy, and
Mary Ann, are listed as children of Ellis Willoughby in Returns beginning
in 1842. His wife Elizabeth is not mentioned.
The returns show that David boarded the minors with friends and/or relatives.
This was a common practice at the time. The returns also show that the
boarders were reimbursed for their care. The Returns further show that
Ruth Willoughby married Burkett Atkinson, and that Josian Pyron of Pike
County became the legal guardian of Nancy and Mary Ann Willoughby around
1854. These two girls had lived with the Pyrons in Pike County for several
years. Josiah was the husband of Elizabeth Willoughby, who was one of the
sisters of Ellis and David Willoughby. Josiah and Elizabeth married in
Green County, Georgia in 1833.
