I believe the only close airports would be Greenville SC or
Atlanta....however, I think you may be going through ATL either way.....if
you're going to be traveling around GA, possibly the best bet would be
Atlanta....just depends on your preference and needs.

If you anywhere in Dixie you must go through Atlanta. It's a little over an
hour from Atlanta to Athens. Go north on I-85 to Hwy 316, turn east and
you'll be there in a few minutes. You'll go right in front of the GA
Archives, next to the stadium at the I-20 intersection. One of my favorite
libraries anywhere is the Washington Library in Macon, GA. South on I-75
about the same distance from the airport as Athens. Certainly worth the trip
if you're in the area. Don't forget the history section at the UGA Library
in Athens.
