Subject: {not a subscriber} Athens Historical Society's annual volume of
papers is out!
X-Envelope-To: GACLARKE-L

The 2001 edition of the Athens Historian (VOL. 6) has just been mailed.
Articles in this year's issue include:

1. How Athens Came to Be by Mary Bondurant Warren
2. The Oconee River in "Finnegans Wake" by Hugh Kenner
3. A Garden Journal from 1839 kept by Miss Mary E.G. Harden (remember the
old song "Home, Sweet Home"? It is supposed to have been written for Miss
Harden by her suitor John Howard Payne - her father didn't approve of him,
so Miss Harden never married!)
4. Malthus Augustus Ward (1794-1963) by Margaret B. Moore - He was a doctor
& noted horticulturist.
5. Augustin Smith Clayton (1783-1839) by Frances Clayton Bryan Brewer - He
was a legislator & judge.
6. The Charles Dougherty Family: Marriage & Death in 1853 Athens by
Charlotte Thomas Marshall - the marriage of "Puss" Dougherty & the death of
her father, lawyer Charles Dougherty, are detailed in letters from Athens.
7. An exerpt from Gary L. Doster's upcoming book, "A Postcard History of
Athens, Georgia" - due to be released in the Spring of 2002 by the Society.
This excerpt is about "Cloverhurst" - a huge mansion built in 1885 by Dr.
Henry Hull Carlton, subsequently owned by Judge Hamilton McWhorter. The
house was torn down in 1929 and the 200 acre tract on which it sat was
subdivided and sold.
8. The Heritage Room of the Athens-Clarke County Library by Laura Carter -
Laura has been in on the planning and execution of the Heritage Room and is
now its "specialist." Thanks to the many folks who worked so hard to get it
off the ground, Athens has a historical and genealogical collection to be
proud of, and Laura is one who should be thanked for her tireless and
ongoing efforts to keep it up to date!
9. The Story of the Walnut Tree by John P. Bondurant II - Mr. Bondurant
recounts the story of a walnut tree that he planted in 1918 (it's still
going strong!) - there was an effort to plant more walnut trees to produce
the charcoal needed for gas masks used by the GIs in World War I.

This volume is indexed. A five-year cumulative index appeared in Vol. 5
(2000).

The Historian is mailed FREE each year to members - an Individual membership
is $10; Family - $15; Supporting - $35 and Patron $50.

IF you wish to purchase a copy of this year's or any of the previous issues,
send a check for $5 per issue (or $25 for the entire set of six), plus $2
postage payable to Athens Historical Society, to P.O. Box 7745, Athens, GA
30604-7745.

Thanks,
Eve
