Sorry, Marc, but he couldn't have enlisted in Oconee County! It wasn't formed until 1875 - out of Clarke County!!

Thank you for checking. Although Frank Griffeth lived many years in Athens after the war, he was originally from Oconee County and probably enlisted there. Records indicate his service with Company G, 9th Reg. Georgia Guards, and as a member of Glenn's Cavalry Battalion, Georgia Militia. Would love to find a photo (my ggf). Thanks again. MBC.

Hi Marcus,
I did not find a photo for Frank Griffeth , but there is a mentioning of
a James S. Griffeth on page 52 as being the one of Samuel P. Lumpkin's
lieutenants in Johnsons Guards of the 44th GA. Regt. in thins same regiment
is Allen W. Griffeth, David W. Griffeth, James A. Griffeth, and John J.
Griffeth. There is also a John J. Griffeth in the Troup Artillery (became
part of the 2nd Regt. GA. Vol. Inf.). Also, in the Athens Guards which later
became Co. K 3rd GA. Regt. Vol. Inf. there are three listed: George E.
Griffeth, James M. Griffeth, and William L. Griffeth. In the Georgia
Troopers, also known as DeLoney's Co. C and later Ritch's Co. H (part of
Cobbs Legion, Cavalry. Batt., GA. Vol.) there is a D.A. Griffeth listed. In
the Clarke County Rifles, also known as Co. L, 3rd GA. Regt. Vol. Inf.)
there are 3: David H. Griffeth, Edward A. Griffeth, and Edward L. Griffeth.
There are lots of Griffeths listed but I did not find Francis "Frank"
Griffeth.
Sandy :o)

> Hi,
> I was hoping that someone could help me. I have a reprinted copy of
the book "These Men She Gave: The Civil War Diary of Athens, Georgia" but
all of the photos are Xeroxed. I was wondering if there was anyone on the
list who has an original copy of this book who would not mind scanning the
photos of Howell Cobb, Jr. and (Middleton) Pope Barrow and emailing them to
me. I would really appreciate it. Pope was my 2nd cousin 5 times removed,
while Howell, Jr.---though not related to me directly---was my cousin's
nephew. My first cousin (6 times removed) was Marion McHenry Lumpkin who
married T.R.R. Cobb. For anyone who is researching the Lumpkin, Barrows,
Cobbs, etc. of Athens, Georgia you can find all of my information available
at: www.piedmontsoftware.com/sandy/genealogy.htm Thank you for your help!
